Like 1066, Roger Bannister and 'one if by land, two if by sea', who doesn't know the Beatles? For the academically-challenged: the Battle of Hastings; the first sub-four-minute mile; Paul Revere; and the absolutely most amazing band of the 20th century. The British import that single-handedly took popular music from dance-band bobby sox to world stage, John, Paul, George and Ringo were the Fab Four. Barbers tossed their clippers out the window, infant sons bore their names and young girls and their mothers who should have known better swooned and swarmed stages as Beatle-mania overtook at least two continents. The Beatles led the way for young bands to break into the mainstream and in the process dabbled in other media and substances of interest to them. From Ed Sullivan in 1964 to their break-up in 1970, the band churned out a long list of hits that are cemented in music consciousness; I Wanna Hold Your Hand, Yesterday, Hey Jude, Penny Lane and Let It Be are just a few that can make baby-boomers light-headed with reverie.     Fired by the Beatles when they were on the brink of mega-stardom, Pete Best became a footnote in musical history. It took a long time, but today he’s okay with that, and he’s carving out his own success with his own band that bears his name. Best turned 67 in November of 2008. He still lives in Liverpool, and still speaks in that adenoidal, throaty Northern accent called Scouse. (read more)
